On Jeopardy a couple of weeks ago, the game show showed contestants the picture below and they had to come up with the answer to this question:
To accommodate big jets a girder bridge helped extend the runway 4,000 feet at Madeira International Airport on an island of this nation.

The answer wasn’t that important to me. But it’s Portugal.
I could hardly get over that picture. Here’s another shot.
I think I could walk and even drive on this bridge, on the inside lane of course, but landing on a bridge and so close to the water, would surely make me feel stressed.
Such an ingenious design that in 2004 it was granted the Outstanding Structure Award by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering.
I’ve seen the structure referred to as a platform or described as a runway that sits on stilts. A bridge by another name is still a bridge to me.
